College should be a time of great experiences, memories, and opportunities; if only thoughts of late-night binge drinking, possible hazing and unnerving predators did not come into the minds of most parents. So how is a parent of a college student or entering-college student supposed to act and behave? Would the approval of personal security products such as mace or pepper spray or even lipstick pepper spray alleviate any such worries? If so, should they be allowed on college campuses, even in the states where they are not legal? As guardians, we want to be supportive of our teens and be excited with them about their new endeavor, but safety is a huge issue that has to be addressed first. Pepper spray is classified as an inflammatory agent and is illegal or requires a license in at least four states in the , while mace is an irritant, similar to tear gas that is less harmful. Are these products that are supposed to protect one's security actually weapons themselves, so is this the best choice for achieving safety? Though, one thing is for certain, and that is that panicking does not help in anyway. The best approach to satisfying a teen entering college as well as one's own fears is to show a shared excitement and go full fledged with getting ready for college and along with this, advise the teen of some safety guidelines to always remember.
1. never to walk alone anywhere late at night- It is always best to stay in groups and walk only in lit areas.
2. always pay close attention to where their drinks are, even if they are just at the dining hall
3. to know how to get in contact with Campus Safety- Even though Campus Po seem intimidating, they really are just trying to protect the students and do what is best for them, so never be afraid to call for help.
4. When back in the dorms, always lock all doors and windows- Students tend to think they do not need to lock up their rooms if they are not located on the first floor of a dorm building, this is so not true, theft and misconduct can happen anywhere during any time of the day.
5. Safe Partying- With as much sheltering that a parent can give a child while at home, this goes out the window and has no affect when a teen leaves for college, so all a parent can do is advise them with tips for alternatives to partying or safe partying.
6. Teach your child to be smart about hazing- Although it is very hard to categorize or stop hazing activities, one can be ready and responsive if one ever arises
7. Just to be extra safe, always carry a personal security product of pepper spray, mace, or a lipstick pepper spray in a purse or book bag.
College should be a time of not only academic achievements or social-affairs, but also a time of personal growth through every day's life lessons. Make sure to definitely let your child know that college can be SAFE AND FUN, and to weigh the pros and cons of carrying a personal security product.
